SCAB BIOLOGY
Daily scab infection conditions rating chart   Ratings on this chart account for ascospore maturity, previous ascospore releases, leaf wetness duration, amount and timing of rain, average temperature, leaf size, and foliar susceptibility.  It is a comprehensive, but relative, estimate of primary scab infection conditions.  It does not estimate the actual absolute risk because it does not account for inoculum level, which is the single most important component of scab risk.

          Ascospore maturity by itself is less useful than comprehensive estimate shown in the Dailyabove.

This table estimates the timing and severity for each rain event during primary scab season.  
      Primary & secondary scab infection periods: Summary
     This table has less detail, but it covers wetting periods throughout the growing season. 
It also forecasts scab conditions one day further ahead than the detailed report. 



SCAB FUNGICIDE TIMING
   Primary scab

       
* For orchards protected by a "Surface fungicide"
           The "Surface fungicide" group is also called "Contact" or "Protectant" fungicides.  It includes: Captan, Dithane, Manex, Manzate, Penncozeb, Polyram, and Syllit.
        For sterol inhibitor fungicides (Nova, Procure, Rubigan) applied with a full-dose Surface fungicide, use the Surface fungicide table to estimate the respray date. 
        An estimated respray date is not available for sterol inhibitor fungicides used alone or with a reduced rate of a Surface fungicide.

    
   * For orchards protected by a Strobilurin fungicide
           The strobilurin fungicides are Flint and Sovran.

        * For orchards protected by a Sulfur fungicide   
           
No postinfection estimates are included in the sulfur table because it is designed for organic spray programs that do not include synthetic postinfection fungicides.

Low-scab blocks where scab ascospore release is not considered significant unless there is daytime rain.  Use these low-scab tables ONLY if you know the orchard's scab index from the previous fall.  See the New England Apple Pest Management Guide for details.

The rules used to estimate residue depletion for insecticide protection against plum curculio, codling moth, and apple maggot follow commonly stated guidelines for organophosphate insecticides.  Depletion rules for newer materials (such as Actara, Assail, Avaunt or Calypso) or pyrethroids may be different.

Thinning weather synopsis chart 

    Thinning weather table has the same ratings in text format.

    Thinning weather estimates are based on the influence of night time temperatures and daytime cloud cover on sensitivity of young apples to postbloom thinning agents.
 

Rough estimate of McIntosh harvest dates  This page only is active after Full bloom, and the final estimate requires 30 days of temperature data after Full bloom.
 

Preharvest weather influences on Storability, Drop, Color, and Scald risk 
   This table presents indicators for potential effects of temperature and drought on long-term storability of apples, high temperatures on acclerated drop of mature McIntosh, optimum temperature and sunlight conditions for developing fruit color, and decrease in scald susceptibility with increasing accumulation of degree hours below 50F.
