Upcoming Surveys
Christmas tree mailings - spring 2008
The USDA, through its
Agricultural Statistics Service
collects data on
pest management practices ,
agricultural pesticide use and
pesticide
residues on food.
The
2002
Census of Agriculture has information on pesticide use in each
New England state for each crop,
and also maps on
national
pesticide use.
Responses from pesticide use surveys done in the Northeast in 1992
and 1997 are also available.
Commercial agriculture accounts for about 31% of total pesticide use.
USDA also has a report on
pest management for major U.S. crops. It is a large
file that takes about 2 minutes to download with a 56K dial-up modem.
The US
Geological Survey National Pesticide Use Maps are
limited to data from 1998 or earlier. The USGS site provides
many other reports on pesticides in the US environment. Two examples are
Pesticides in the
Atmosphere and Pesticides in
the Nation’s Streams and Ground Water.
How we conduct surveys
We survey pest management practices and needs
for New England so that our region is accurately represented in
regulatory and political decisions; to guide research, education and
Extension efforts within the region; and to increase understanding and
access to pest management information.
Through
standardized survey design and research-based procedures, the PRO
New England survey method produces statistically valid
responses at minimum cost.
The surveys identify high priority pest concerns,
tactics, and the factors that influence pest management
decisions. By addressing the whole range of pest management
decision making and action, the surveys are more informative
than surveys that focus exclusively on quantifying pesticide use.
